What does RH mean?

Relative humidity (RH) tells you how much moisture the air contains compared with the maximum it could hold at that temperature. That is why the same amount of moisture can produce a different RH reading when the crawl space gets colder or warmer.

Is 60% humidity too high for a crawl space?

One brief reading around 60% is not the same as a crawl space sitting above 60% day after day. What matters is the pattern. Persistent high humidity, condensation, damp wood or a musty smell are stronger reasons to investigate the moisture source.

Do not chase a number while ignoring water. A dehumidifier removes water vapor from the air. It cannot repair a plumbing leak, stop groundwater entry or replace proper exterior drainage.

What humidity should I set my dehumidifier to?

For a controlled crawl space, 50–55% RH is a sensible starting setpoint. If the unit easily holds that level and the space stays dry, there is usually little benefit in forcing it much lower. A very low setpoint can simply increase runtime and electricity use.

Where should I measure humidity?

Put the sensor in open crawl-space air rather than directly beside the dehumidifier outlet, on a wet wall, or against the ground. In a large or divided crawl space, two inexpensive sensors can reveal whether one section stays wetter than another.

If humidity will not come down

  • Look for standing water, plumbing leaks and wet foundation walls.
  • Check whether bare soil is adding moisture to the space.
  • Confirm the crawl space is sealed or conditioned as intended.
  • Make sure condensate drainage is working continuously.
  • Check that airflow is not blocked by walls, stored items or poor placement.
  • Revisit dehumidifier sizing if the unit runs continuously without controlling RH.
