Encapsulation and dehumidification solve different parts of the moisture problem. Encapsulation reduces moisture entering the crawl space. A dehumidifier removes moisture that still reaches the air. Some encapsulated spaces need both; others can stay controlled without a dedicated dehumidifier.

Quick answer

Do not buy a dehumidifier only because the crawl space is encapsulated. Measure the RH after the moisture sources have been controlled. If it stays below roughly 60% and the space remains dry, additional dehumidification may not be necessary. If humidity stays high, a correctly sized unit becomes a logical next step.

What encapsulation actually does

A properly designed closed crawl space usually includes a ground vapor barrier plus air-sealing at the perimeter and openings. That can dramatically reduce the moisture load compared with a bare-earth, vented crawl space. Department of Energy Building America research found that unvented conditioned crawl spaces reduced humidity compared with traditional vented designs.

Why can an encapsulated crawl space still be humid?

“Encapsulated” does not mean moisture-free. Humidity can still come from damp foundation materials, small air leaks, plumbing problems, groundwater, construction moisture or air exchanged with the house. The answer is to identify which source remains—not simply to install the largest dehumidifier available.

  • Relative humidity remains around or above 60% for extended periods.
  • The crawl space smells persistently musty even after obvious water sources are corrected.
  • Condensation appears on ducts, pipes or other cool surfaces.
  • Wood or insulation stays damp instead of drying after encapsulation work.
  • The chosen crawl-space design relies on dedicated dehumidification as its conditioning strategy.

When might you not need one?

If the space is dry, properly sealed, free of bulk-water problems and its RH stays controlled through humid weather, there is no reason to add equipment simply for the sake of having it. Measure first and let the conditions decide.
