Square footage is a useful starting point when sizing a crawl-space dehumidifier, but it is not the only number that matters. Sealing, humidity, temperature, drainage and the layout of the space can all change what you actually need.

Don’t choose by square footage alone

Two crawl spaces with the same floor area can have very different moisture loads. A tightly encapsulated 1,500 sq. ft. space is usually an easier job than a loosely sealed 1,500 sq. ft. space with open vents and damp soil.

The biggest shopping trap: “pints per day”

A product advertised as a 120-pint dehumidifier is not automatically more powerful than one advertised as 70 pints. The two numbers may have been measured at very different temperature and humidity conditions.

How humid is too humid?

High relative humidity is a reason to investigate moisture sources, but humidity alone does not tell you why the crawl space is damp. If you have recurring standing water, an active plumbing leak or obvious groundwater intrusion, fix the bulk-water problem rather than trying to solve it with a larger dehumidifier.

Temperature can eliminate otherwise good products

Crawl spaces can be much cooler than the living area above them. Before buying, compare your lowest typical crawl-space temperature with the manufacturer’s published operating range.

Should you oversize?

Some capacity headroom can be useful, especially in demanding conditions, but the biggest unit you can afford is not automatically the best choice. Larger machines can cost more, take up more room and move more air than the installation needs.

The goal is appropriate capacity with reasonable headroom, not maximum capacity at any cost.

What about multiple sections?

A dehumidifier can only dry air that can reach it. If your crawl space is split by walls, piers or isolated sections, look beyond pint capacity and consider airflow, placement and ducting.

Gravity drain or condensate pump?

This does not change how much moisture the machine can remove, but it can make or break the installation. If water can travel continuously downhill to a suitable drain, gravity is usually simplest. If it has to move uphill, you will normally need a pump.

Is a bigger dehumidifier always better?

No. You want adequate capacity and useful headroom, but excessive capacity can add unnecessary cost and size without solving underlying water problems.

Should a crawl-space dehumidifier run all the time?

Most permanent units use a humidistat and cycle based on the selected humidity setting. Continuous full-output operation can indicate a demanding moisture load, an undersized unit or another issue that deserves investigation.

What if I have standing water?

Address the bulk-water source first. A dehumidifier controls moisture in the air; it should not be used as the primary fix for an active leak, drainage problem or recurring groundwater intrusion.
